The Challenge
The Trenton Art Garage is the redevelopment of a decades-long vacant, 3-story brick shell in the heart of the Station North Arts and Entertainment district. The building has seen many lives, ranging from horse stables, carriage storage, an auto upholstery factory to now as a mixed-use redevelopment. The project comprises 8 residential units with a ground floor commercial space to function as Graham Projects’ headquarters.
The design team delicately intervened to salvage the historic masonry shell and timber frame construction, while adapting the upper levels of the building to accommodate residential occupation. Graham Projects, as anchor tenant, created the place-making features that surround the building, grounding the building and improving the public space it occupies in the Arts District.

Feedback
— Rick Byrd, Developer
“We’re excited to turn an abandoned eye-sore into into something that can better serve the community. The entire development team on this projects are artists. They span MICA grads, art directors and architects. We wanted to offer affordable housing and studio space that fits the neighborhood.
